A study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine found that heartburn, a common symptom of heart disease, is often a symptom of low blood pressure.
The study, a "study of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases," showed a 2.4 percent decrease in blood pressure in patients taking Nexium, the prescription drug for heartburn and other symptoms. The drugs work by blocking enzymes in the walls of cells lining the stomach and intestines.
The researchers found that patients on high blood pressure and other heartburn symptoms were more likely to develop stomach ulcers and other heartburn symptoms than those on less prescribed medications. But a small, statistically significant, decrease in heartburn symptoms was seen in only 6 percent of those taking the drugs.
"This is a very important finding because we are finding that these drugs can cause a small but significant reduction in blood pressure that is often a symptom of low blood pressure," said lead author Dr. Joshua Stevens, director of the Heart Disease Program at Harvard Medical School.
The study was presented at the meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
"These drugs are important because they protect your heart," said Dr. Joseph M. Stevens, the co-director of the Heart Disease Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Stevens said his study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the University of Chicago and the Brigham and Women's Hospital.
About two-thirds of those taking Nexium will be in the United States over the next year, according to the National Institutes of Health.
About one in five Americans taking the drugs have a chronic condition, said Dr. Lisa M. Riehle, the director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
"The problem is chronic heart disease is common in this population," she said.
Taking Nexium is the only approved drug for chronic heart disease, she said, so patients should not be prescribed a drug that could cause heart attack.
Nexium has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of heartburn.
About one in four Americans will have heartburn the first day of treatment, Dr. Stevens said. About two in 10 people taking Nexium will be treated within six months of their last dose, said Dr. Robert A. Nardin, the head of the FDA's heartburn program for the agency.
Nardin, who is also co-author of the study, said the drug works by blocking the enzymes that produce acid in the stomach, which results in an increased amount of stomach acid.

Heartburn is a common symptom of heart disease.
It often causes pain and swelling in the stomach and other parts of the body. It can cause pain in the chest and difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing, and even vision loss.
In some cases, it can be an indicator of kidney problems, the researchers said.
One of the drugs taken for heartburn is Prilosec, which was originally developed to treat acid-related heartburn.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in June found that a higher dose of Prilosec increased heart attack and stroke than a placebo.
"The higher the dose, the more likely the heart attack and stroke are," said Dr. Steven N. Baer, president of the American College of Cardiology.
